Arudhra Darshan falls in the month of Margazhi on the full moon night with the star Thiruvadhirai falling on that day. It is in celebration of the ecstatic dance of Lord Shiva in the form of Nataraja as depicted in the temple at Chidambaram. In 2018, Arudra Darshan falls on January 2, Tuesday.
Special poojas and abhishekam are conducted to Lord Shiva in temples on this day.It is very auspicious to see the idol of Nataraj being carried in a procession on this day. In the temple at Chidambaram where Lord Shiva is depicted as Nataraja, grand and massive celebrations are held on this day.
Lord Shiva’s dance symbolises cosmic evolution. His dance movements energise the movements of the Universe. His dance ensures continuity of the Universe since creation, annihilation, and recreation of the Universe are part and parcel of the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva.
Kali (திருவாதிரை களி) is the neivedhyam offered to Lord Shiva on Arudra Darshan. It is a sweet dish made of rice and moong dal. Eating this neivedhyam is believed to remove all the afflictions in our life.
